The Bosch Aquastar Water Heater

The Bosch Aquastar water heater line includes a variety of tankless water heaters, all gas – both natural gas (sometimes abbreviated NG), and propane (often abbreviated LP). The two kinds of gas require some different fittings, so be sure to get the kind you will need in your installation.

The Bosch Aquastar 2400ES

If you need to operate two major hot water appliances at the same time – shower and laundry, for example – one of your best choices is the Bosch Aquastar 2400ES. The ES at the end of the name stands for Energy Star, and indicates that this model meets U.S. government Energy Star specifications.

No electric tankless hot water heaters receive this rating, and only some gas ones. The model 2400ES qualifies for the U.S. tax credit, which is up to 30% of the cost.

The 2400ES would be an excellent choice, as it should last 20 years or more, far longer than conventional tank-type heaters. The Bosch website states that this tankless heater will give save up to 50% of the energy you are using now, depending of course on your current setup. It is described there as "easy to install," which would mean for experienced do-it-yourselfers or installation professionals. It offers a variety of venting options, making it easier to use in a retrofit – where you are adding it to an existing house – or in a new house being built.

You might run across older models 2400E or EO; they have been updated by the 2400ES. It has the Energy Star qualification that they lack.

The 2700ES

The other Bosch Aquastar water heater which qualifies for that tax credit is the Bosch 2700ES – also a tankless Energy Star unit. This one is for larger families, as it allows your household to simultaneously use three hot water activities without running out of water at any of them. That could be two different showers going on in different bathrooms, plus a load of laundry or a batch of dishes… any arrangement that adds up to three!

The 1600 Series

The Bosch Aquastar water heater 1600P has a pilot ignition, and the 1600H has what is called a "revolutionary hydro-generated ignition system, allowing the water heater to operate without a standing pilot, electricity, or a battery. " There is also a model 1600PS which was created to be used if you have a solar hot water system, or if you heat your water from a woodstove, and want something to be a backup.

These units can just hang on your wall. The 1600P delivers up to 4.3 gallons a minute, and the others are likely similar. For smaller families, the 1600P may be perfect. It replaces the classic model 125B.

Do be aware that installation needs to follow the instructions exactly, that Bosch doesn't have the best reputation for customer service (read Amazon reviews and others), and that getting used to a tankless heater takes some adjustments.
